The Notices

Pcc approval for the café at Busbridge Church, and joining the parishes of busbridge and hambledon

A view of the café with outdoor terrace.

A view of the café with outdoor terrace.

The trustees (PCCs) of the churches met recently and we are delighted to share two bits of news with everyone. On Monday 26 April the PCC approved plans for the conversion of the Busbridge Church Centre into a café for parishioners and the local community. More

Hambledon PCC voted to seek diocesan approval for us to become one parish. Busbridge PCC had already voted for this. This does not change anything ‘on the ground’ but it does mean our governance, trusteeship and resources are held together better. We already meet in the same room as a joint PCC so not much would change there. There are no plans to change local ministry, local worship or local presence – particularly for Hambledon and we’re looking at ways to ensure that the commitment to long term clergy residence in the village is secured long, long into the future and as watertight as we can possibly make it.

Outward Giving

Go to the Outward Giving page to find out about the 3 things to support this month:

  1. Friends International UK - one of our mission partners which is featured in the latest Outward Giving Update. Friends international is a Christian charity seeking to grow friendship and faith with international students in the UK & Ireland. Over 450,000 international students study at UK universities and some 550,000 come to study English in language schools. FI wants to give students a great time in the UK, chances to experience real local culture, and opportunities to hear the Christian message. Our activities are open to those of all faiths and none.

  2. An update on the work of the Nazareth Way in HMP Send. David Jenkins talks to Lesley Mason in an interview about the needs of those in prisons such as Send, and the work of chaplains.

  3. Christian Aid week 10-16 May. In the absence of door to door collections again this year, it’s even more important that we support by donating online, joining the local quiz or the sponsored challenge to make 300,000 steps during May! More details.

Join the church membership / Electoral Roll - deadline 6 May for APCMs on 23 May.
This year’s APCMs will be on 23 May, and to vote you must be on the electoral roll. The form and instructions can be downloaded HERE.

Sunday 16 May at 7PM - Busbridge Churchyard

Sunday 16 May at 7PM - Hambledon Churchyard

Sunday 16 May at 7PM - Hambledon Churchyard

Reconnect in worship and prayer - 16 May at 7PM
You are called to reconnect in worship and prayer in Busbridge and Hambledon churchyards, when we will be able to enjoy sung worship and prayer ministry together. The theme for Busbridge will be REVIVAL, and at Hambledon DISCERNMENT!
Scroll down to sign up to the Worship and Prayer evenings. Please wear a face covering, and bring a chair if you'd like to sit rather than stand.

APCMs on 23 May: ‘Quality – God’s future for us’ ON ZOOM & AT CHURCH
The prayer evenings will lead us into the APCMs the following Sunday which will follow the abridged morning services:
9AM Heritage followed by the APCM at 9.30AM
10.30AM Busbridge Combined with the APCM starting at 10.45AM (The Family Garden service will take place at 10.30AM for those with children aged 0-11, so if 2 parents are coming to church it’s possible for one to attend the APCM either on Zoom or in church).

Men Matters Breakfast - all (men) welcome to Zoom in at 9AM on Sat 1 May, with their porridge and coffee to share views on current issues. In the wake of Prince Philip’s funeral, the meeting on 1 May will be a chance to share views on the merits of monarchy.

NEXUS online Talk: Women in the Crimean War - 6 May
At the next meeting Margaret Jackson will give us some insights into the roles of women in the Crimean War, with tales from some who were there.  Margaret has a keen interest in history and in portraying historical figures with experience working at Bletchley Park. It should be a fascinating presentation about a war which started in 1853 to uphold the rights of Christian minorities in the Holy Land.  This will be a free Zoom meeting starting at 8.00pm, but you’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you’ll have a chance to chat with others.  We look forward to seeing you!

Saturday Busbridge Prayer group and Prayerfest 0-30 in 60
These will combine for the foreseeable future, and next meet on 8 May at 8.30AM on Zoom.

Ascension Day 13 May
We will join Godalming Churches Together for a service to be held at at St John’s, Farncombe at 5.30PM. There’s plenty of space available. No need to sign up.

Can you help?

Thanks to all those who completed the post-lockdown survey last week.

The Bridge

Our very grateful thanks and a warm welcome to Kirsty Glaysher and Sally Wood who are joining The Bridge as road stewards for respective parts of the Brighton Road.

Meanwhile we are still seeking a new road steward for Shackstead Lane (numbers 2-26 only) and Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146, 111-125)

We're looking for someone who might be able to deliver magazines to 14 houses (the Godalming College end of Shackstead Lane). And we're also looking for a new road steward who, 6 times a year, would be willing to deliver magazines to 32 houses in Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146 & 111-125).

If you live in, or close to these stretches, (or maybe know someone who does and might be willing to take on the role) please contact the editor, Cathy, at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com. We'd be delighted and most appreciative to hear from you.

Sundays

To restart, sustain and keep step with easing restrictions, we now need to recall the army of volunteers that served on Sundays and in all ministries pre 2020!

The most pressing need in the coming weeks is for WELCOMERS at all 3 services (Busbridge and Hambledon). We can’t meet our COVID safety procedures (setting up the hygiene station, signing people in, encouraging hands, face and space) without a committed team of Welcomers. Contact the church office if you’d like to help.

CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES
Tiny Tigers, Ark and Pathfinders await helpers to come forward to run their sessions
. A need for helpers coupled with the short term challenge of restricted numbers in our modestly sized church buildings, have inspired plans to run a service for families with 0-11s in the OR gardens at 10.30AM (alongside the Contemporary service) starting next Sunday 9 May. At least one parent or guardian will need to stay with their children and take part in the fun.

SOUND & VISION. We still need more people on the tech and production team to ensure amazing (i.e. worship enhancing but unobtrusive) sound and vision in the churches as well as via YouTube. Good training will be provided and the skill is highly transferable! Watch the promo below, and contact Jacob if you would like to find out more.

BHC seeks an online digital producer and technician!

The advert for this 6 month part-time contract can be found on the job vacancies page. Please take and look and share with anyone who might be interested. Closing date 9 May 2021.

More Digi-disciples needed!

If you are wondering how we put out 3 online services each week, and who is behind the camera, here’s a great video to show what it’s like, and inspire you! Please contact Jacob if you’d like to be involved or find out more. e: jacob.taylor@bhcgodalming.org

“Roll up, roll up!”… To restart, sustain and keep step with easing restrictions, we now need to recall the army of volunteers that served on Sundays and in all ministries pre 2020!

The most pressing need in the coming weeks is for WELCOMERS at all 3 services (Busbridge and Hambledon). We can’t meet our COVID safety procedures (setting up the hygiene station, signing people in, encouraging hands, face and space) without a committed team of Welcomers.

  • For those attending Hambledon who’d like to get involved with the roles of ‘welcoming’, ‘reading’ and ‘intercessors’ please get in touch with Fran (fran.duffell@bhcgodalming.org) this week.

  • Welcomers are also needed for services at Busbridge - please contact margot.spencer@bhcgodalming.org.

CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES. Having been advised that it would be 17 May before groups could meet, the advice (government and diocese) changed this week to Go! Go! (COVID safely, of course). Quick off the blocks, Ichthus met on Tuesday and ABC toddlers will restart next Tuesday. Explorers is ready to go, but Tiny Tigers, Ark and Pathfinders await helpers to run their sessions.

Lack of leaders, coupled with the short term challenge of restricted numbers in our modestly sized church buildings, have inspired plans to run a service for families with 0-11s in the OR gardens at 10.30AM (alongside the Contemporary service). This would be a fully active “Muddy Church”. At least one parent or guardian will need to stay with their children and take part in the fun. We aim to start this on Sunday 9 May, so watch the notices next week. (While this will ease the need for leaders in the short-term, we still need as many as possible involved to lead in different age groups).

Racial Justice

This week has seen a number of high profile items in the news regarding cases of Racial Injustice. Many of you will have seen the Panorama programme on Monday asking the question ‘ Is the Church racist?’ On Tuesday evening we heard the news of the guilty verdict in the George Floyd murder trial and on Thursday the report of the Church of England Anti-Racism Taskforce came out.

As a Benefice we have a Racial Justice Group as part of our PCC. We are appalled by the level of racism that the Panorama programme exposed and are committed to rooting out racism in the church. The Diocese has a Racial Justice Group looking at how we can tackle the issue in the Guildford Diocese and they have posted a response to the Panorama programme on the diocesan website – do look at it.

Do get in touch with one of us if you have concerns you wish us to address with reference to our benefice.

Busbridge Church Centre Redevelopment

Busbridge Church Centre redevelopment - Notice of a special PCC meeting Monday 26 April at 8PM. The opening of a church café could really be something to look forward to this Autumn! More will be shared next week if project is given the green light on Monday.

HMP Send revisited

The outward giving team ask you to watch the video in which David Jenkins talks to Lesley Mason about her work in HMP Send women’s prison, the Nazareth Way and how you can help, or donate via the giving page.

Webinars to prepare for the Archbishop’s to visit to Guildford Diocese in September – 26 & 28 April

This invitation is for anyone with a heart for evangelism and/or would like to know more about a unique visit here by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Next week’s webinars will provide guidance on how parishes can participate in the mission to Guildford Diocese to be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury from 24-27 September.  It is being run twice: on Monday 26 and Wednesday 28 April, both at 8pm.

This is a really exciting opportunity. The weekend of the Archbishop’s visit will include large guest events across the diocese at which Archbishop Justin will launch evangelism courses, like Alpha and Pilgrim.

The webinar is for clergy and laity, especially those in your parish with a heart for local outreach who might take leading roles. Speakers include Chris Russell, Archbishop’s Advisor on Evangelism, John McGinley from the Archbishop’s College of Evangelists, Peter Harwood, Director of Mission, and David Senior, Coordinator of the Archbishop’s Mission. Places should be booked on Zoom in advance, using the following links:

After over 40 years worshipping at Hambledon and Busbridge, having started as members of the Hambledon Youth Fellowship in the 1970s, we are off to Totland, Isle of Wight with son Matt and his wife Emily. We wish a fond farewell to all of our friends and are sorry we won’t see you in person. Please get in touch if coming our way. We’d love to see you. Our mobiles and emails remain the same. God Bless you all, we will miss you. David and Linda

David, Linda and Matt have made a huge contribution to Busbridge&Hambledon church over many years, and have faithfully served in pretty much every aspect of church life: youth work (all), outward giving and reordering the church (Linda), carpentry and maintenance (David), music, tech and web site design (Matt) and we owe them huge thanks. They will be sorely missed by us, and we wish them every blessing as they start the next phase of their journey.

We are sad to announce the death of Nora Kennea, a longstanding and faithful member of Busbridge Church, until ill health prevented her from coming on Sundays.  We extend our love to Trevor, Nigel, Carole and the whole family.  Please pray for God’s peace and comfort to surround them all.  Nora’s funeral service will be in Busbridge Church but, because of Covid restrictions, numbers are limited, so the service will be by invitation only.

Services are back in both churches from 11 April, AND broadcast live on YouTube.

From 25 April the Classic service at Busbridge and the Heritage service at Hambledon will remain at 9AM. The Contemporary Conversations service will also move into Busbridge Church, and start at the slightly later time of 10.30AM.

Communion (bread only) will take place on 1st Sundays of the month in the 9AM Busbridge Classic service, and on 3rd Sundays in the 9AM Hambledon Heritage service.

Those attending will need to sign up and wear a face covering, and listen to the worship. Farewell to David and Linda

David and Linda Smith are off to live by the sea on 21st April! God Bless you all, we will miss you!

Nora’s funeral service will be in Busbridge Church on Tuesday 4 May 2021, at 1.30 p.m..  Because of Covid restrictions, numbers are limited, so the service will be by invitation only.

Easter Appeal for A Rocha UK—Caring for God’s Earth

Instead of a Mission Sunday this Easter, this year we are running a “Mission Month” during Lent.  Our Easter Appeal is in aid of our mission partner charity, A Rocha UK.  A Rocha UK is a Christian charity campaigning for the environment through number of activities.  Please take time to read the Outward Giving Update which explains A Rocha UK’s activities and follow the instructions to make a donation. (Copies of the OG Update can be found at the back of Busbridge Church). To support the Easter Appeal, there is an eco thread to the Lent challenges which are being sent out on weekdays by text.  Catch up on this week’s challenges (see below).

‘Meeting the world right here in Surrey!’  - Nexus Talk, Thursday 8th April

Louise Baumberg will talk to us on ‘Meeting the world right here in Surrey!’  Louise has worked with refugees, mainly young people who have arrived alone, as a foster carer and, more recently, as a caseworker with Big Leaf Foundation. This charity supports displaced young people in Surrey.

Do come along and find out about the challenges and achievements of this diverse group of individuals living in our community.  It may give you a fresh perspective on life, and all the things we take for granted.

This will be a free Zoom meeting starting at 8.00pm, but you’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you can chat with others.  We look forward to seeing you!

Road Steward needed for The Bridge magazine for Shackstead Lane (numbers 2-26 only) and Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146, 111-125)

The Bridge magazine would like to thank Mary Keech for her time as a Road Steward for the upper part of Shackstead Lane. We're very grateful to her for all her years of service. We're now looking for someone who might be able to take over her patch of 14 houses (the Godalming College end of Shackstead Lane).

We're also looking for a new Road Steward who, 6 times a year, would be willing to deliver magazines to 32 houses in Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146 & 111-125). If you live in, or close to this stretch, (or maybe know someone who does and might be willing to take on the role) please contact the editor, Cathy, at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com. We'd be delighted and most appreciative to hear from you.

News from our mission partner: The Cellar Camino Café - fundraising for a new coffee machine and till for lift off after lockdown!
The Cellar is on a fundraising drive to help lift off after lockdown. The move to the new premises next to the Borough Hall in July has been really positive, and The Cellar has done well on spiritual capital from staying open during the winter lockdowns. The café has had a good number of people for takeaways, hot meals on food vouchers put at the community food store, and much supportive pastoral work and street witness with prayer. With the new bigger and better venue, the management team want to buy a good and efficient coffee machine, and till to improve security and speed of use. Can you help? What to do next :-

Contact Chris Jagger for more information 01483 415334 | chrisjagger42@gmail.com  Donate via our website www.thecellarcafe.co.uk or use the web site to set up a standing order to support the ongoing work of the Cellar.
