The Notices

BHC Outward Giving - MISSION SUNDAY 27 June - In Aid of TEARFUND India Coronavirus Appeal

The OG group writes: We are so fortunate in this country. More than half the population has been vaccinated, many of us have received second doses with few ill effects, and things are at long last beginning to open up. Compare the situation in India. Deaths from coronavirus are among the highest in the world. Having congratulated themselves on having controlled the pandemic last year the country has in recent months experienced a spiralling outbreak. Cities were locked down in response, and labourers within the cities returned to their villages miles away in the countryside, taking the virus with them.

We have seen on our television/computer screens the distressing images of people queuing to get into hospitals, dying while awaiting treatment, shortages of oxygen, ventilators, not to mention of doctors and nurses. And we wonder: it’s so far away, how does this affect us? Because, as Jesus said in the parable of the Good Samaritan, they are our neighbours. And we are in addition told that until the whole world has been cleared of coronavirus none of us is safe from it, vaccine or no vaccine. And, many of the vaccines we receive are made in India!

It’s time for us to show our compassion and our gratitude. Gift-aided envelopes are available at all services. Donations can also be made to the BHC appeal online, or via the Tearfund web site directly.

Tearfund have produced a 4-minute video which gives a message of hope, that people in India will get through this with their usual resilience and that recovery will come. But they do need our help now!

Latest news on the Busbridge Centre conversion project:

  • The Busbridge Centre Improvement Team are inviting you to Walk-thru & Post-it Prayer for the conversion project, and the ministry that will flow out of the café. Pens and post-its will be available for you to write a prayer for the CIT to pray when they meet every Thursday. Please join them in prayer for the Yew Tree café too - the construction industry is challenged by a shortage of materials, which may impact the building works. More Background info.

  • The centre is being cleared now, and there are items up for grabs (doors, shelves, carpet tiles, curtains…) There’s a list of items below, or pop into have a look after church on Sunday. Please contact the office if you would like anything. Items are free, but donations to the Mission Sunday Tearfund Appeal would be gratefully received!

NEXUS talk 1 July
On Thursday 1st July at 8.00pm, Anto Ficatier, our Youth Minister, will tell us something about his life before joining Busbridge&Hambledon Church. Anto has worked in diverse roles and in many countries, hence his title: ‘Born to Cross Continents’ ! It will be fascinating to hear of his globetrotting experiences and how these led him to ministry with the young people of BHC! We had hoped to meet in person, but sadly that still cannot happen, so this will be a free Zoom meeting again.  You’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you’ll have a chance to chat with others before Anto speaks to us.

Next Marriage Preparation Course starting 3 July
See Marriage Prepration Day for details, and don’t start your marriage without it! This is open to any couples planning or considering the next step together. You don’t have to be getting married at Busbridge&Hambledon, or even engaged. (If you are already married, you might want to consider the Marriage Course when it next runs.)

Ordination of Patrick Samuels at Guildford Cathedral | 4 July at 3PM
From ordinand to curate! While we cannot support Patrick in person, details will be available to watch the service on YouTube or Facebook. This will be followed by the Reading of Declaration at the Busbridge Classic and Contemporary services on Sunday 11 July, and a welcome at Hambledon the following week. Please pray for Patrick and give thanks for his calling and ministry.

Changes to Hambledon Services from 13 June
It’s great news that the Heritage Service will now start at the slightly more comfortable time of 9.30AM (at church and on YouTube), and will now be followed by an informal contemporary service at 10.30AM (in person only). In due course there may be coffee and band-led worship at this service, but for now the format is fairly fluid and evolving. On 4 and 17 July the congregation plans to meet at Hambledon Village Shop to share a coffee and support the Hambledon Junior cricket team!

Summer Blitz Clear up morning on 26 June
Thanks to all those who have signed up to help at the short clear up session around Busbridge Church and the Old Rectory on Saturday. Under the continued restrictions, we have had to cap the numbers at 30, and the event is now full. Everyone is invited to continue the day at Hambledon in the afternoon, where a small party will set to work in and around the church. The event is back on in the calendar if you wish to sign up, with numbers limited to 30.

Would you like to be involved in shaping the Church of England? Nominations are now open for election to Diocesan Synod and despite what you may think, you do not have to be a particular age or from a particular background to stand. Over the next three years, the Synod will be discussing issues such as the environmental crisis, diversity and inclusion, young people and use of financial resources. See here for more details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74vO_CmmyKc. If you would like any more information, please talk to Simon Taylor, or email synod@cofeguildford.co.uk or jenny.lansdowne@bhcgodalming.org.

Church Family News

We send much love to Penny and her mother Anne, on the death of Harold (their uncle and brother respectively) on 22 June.  Please pray also for Harold’s wife and the wider family, that they will know that they are surrounded by God’s love and comfort.

We have been deeply saddened to hear of the death of Gabrielle (Gay) Mabley, a longstanding and much-loved member of the Hambledon church family.  The funeral will take place at Hambledon Church on 7 July at 11AM. Please pray for Gabrielle’s family and many friends, that they may know God's presence with them, and his peace.
