Where and how do small groups meet?

Godalming Minster has lots of groups which meet weekly or fortnightly, on different days of the week. They meet in peoples homes, in church rooms and online. Rev Hilary Pettman oversees our small groups and will be happy to suggest a group for you to try based on where you live, your life stage and availability.

We recommend “the Swedish method” of bible study which sets out an easy format that anyone can lead, but each group might vary a little.

The best things about being part of a small group?

  • You get to ask questions and discuss the talks in the sermon series from all angles. No comments or questions are too silly.
  • You can share your highs and lows and pray for each other.
  • The whats apps of prayer requests and prayers answered
  • You might find a hot meal on the doorstep if you’ve just had a baby, a hand made loaf if you’re navigating a harder season, or a lift to an appointment.

What do all small groups have in common?

  • They pray together
  • They study the bible
  • Journey together in faith, sharing love and support in the joys, messiness and struggles of life.

Why be part of a small group?

To grow in faith and discipleship

To become a follower of Jesus Christ is to be his disciple. A disciple literally means “one who is learning.” We believe that learning and growing are lifelong tasks. When we stop, we cease to be disciples and will experience stagnation in our spiritual lives. We encourage every member of Godalming Minster to commit to at least one programme of faith formation each year. This is best done by being part of a small group, or signing up to a course such as Alpha, the Bible course or a Lent study. We need to remember that our commitment to growth helps those around us to fulfil their own commitment. In this way our Church becomes healthy.

To build a healthy community where everyone is cared for

We describe Godalming Minster as a community of believers and not simply a collection of individuals who gather for one hour a week. Christian community is one in which we are truly accountable to one another and accountable for one another. In a parish this size with multiple locations and congregations, this can be a real challenge. We want everyone to contribute to building community and to see themselves as an integral part of the life of this parish. This involves reaching out and connecting with others.
